The setting is New England in the near future. The story revolves around Sgt. Major Trenton Leary, an extraordinary man who has helped the government create seven clones of himself. Each clone was grown for a single purpose imbued with and named after an ancient Rune symbol. They were then trained for military positions that correspond to their Rune's attributes [Trent-Uruz (Balance), Trent-Teiwaz (Combat), Trent-Dagaz (Assassin), Trent-Gabo (Wealth), and 3 clones meant to serve together as an oracle - two of them (Past & Present) are slain early but the psychic Trent-Nauthiz (Future) escapes].

There was a revolt at the offshore cloning facility where it was destroyed and one clone died. At that moment Trenton and his remaining clones get a piece of their soul back and they all realized they are sharing one soul between them. The experience gave them each a powerfully addictive surge of life and an unyielding desire to be the only one to possess Trenton's whole spirit.

The government sends a skilled military detective, Drake Banyan, to work with Trenton to apprehend the clones as the manhunt ensues. The action and intrigue is based around each version of Trenton using their particular talents to take out the others and Drake trying to bring them in alive. Each clone has a very unique persona matching his Rune attributes and tactics.

Fey, Trenton's wife, is ex-military and tough. However, she is in the middle of the struggle as the clones use her as bait, pose as her husband, try to seduce her with money, hunt and try to molest her and one shoots himself in front of her.

Who will survive as the clones hunt each other to possess the whole of the spirit; to be the one, true Trenton Leary.
